Osteoporosis fractures and pain not only for women

by Marijke Durning, RN on January 14th, 2008

A lot of attention is given to women and their risk of osteoporosis, thinning of the bones. Of course, considering that osteoporosis can affect up to half of women over the age of 50 and a quarter of men, the focus on women is understandable. But, we do have to remember that men get osteoporosis too.

An article in the January 14 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine reports that men who are over 60 years old and who have low testosterone levels may be at higher risk of breaking a bone. What is interesting is that many of the fractures are what is called low-trauma fractures, meaning that the fall wasn’t from a standing height or lower.

You can read a press release on the article on the newswire, Eurekalert: Low testosterone levels associated with risk of fracture in men over 60.
