The never-ending debate about pain and medication dependency
At the beginning of January, Peggy Compton, RN, PhD, published an commentary called Should Opioid Abusers Be Discharged From Opioid-Analgesic Therapy? This very interesting commentary is in pdf format and runs 9 pages (plus 2 for info and disclaimer), so it’s long, but well worth the read, I believe. Dr. Compton is an associate professor of Nursing at the Univerity of California, Los Angeles. Among other roles in pain research, she is a principal investitor for NIH (National Institutes of Health)-supported grants focusing on pain and opioid addiction.
Dr. Compton reviews the definition of addiction in patients with chronic pain, monitoring for and assessing addicition, and managing addiction in patients who have chronic pain.
You should have a look at it if you are interested in this topic.
