Article: Arthritic Knees Remain Painful After Arthroscopic Surgery
One of the options for treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee is a minimally invasive surgery called arthroscopic debridement. A review of three randomized controlled studies found that there wasn’t much of a difference between patients who had this procedure and those who had not.

I’m 36 and was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my knee. My main symptoms have been a diminished range of motion, excess swelling on activity, and a frequent dull ache.
After visiting my knee doc, he explained to me that my options were pretty limited (short of synvisc, cortisone, or debridement surgery), and that I should simply modify my activities to eliminate anything that irritated my knee.
I’m a pretty active guy, and that did not sit well with me. I decided to drop some weight and focus on strengthening the leg. What I hadn’t realized was that as the pain and discomfort had increased, my body compensated, and the muscles in the leg had experienced a level of atrophy. After visiting a physical therapist and completing a regimen of strengthening exercises, I’m happy to report a HUGE change in both the level of pain in the knee and the range of motion. I’m able to partake in the activities I had almost resigned to give up.
I would encourage anyone out there diagnosed with knee arthritis to consult a physical therapist and strengthen their leg muscles. Also, I did manage to drop around 10 lbs, which, I believe, also helped.

Hi John, you have some very good advice here. Sometimes a combination of weight loss and physical therapy can do wonders.
Thanks for writing.
