First time runners more prone to injury
People who are new to running have a higher risk of injury than do experienced runners, warns Temple University (Philadelphia, PA) podiatrist Howard Palamarchuk. Much of it has to do with the weight that people put on their feet when they run.

I remember when I was just starting to run many years ago — OUCH. I had to learn tons about listening to my body before I finally understood when to give myself a rest (instead of forcing myself to “break though the wall”.)

This is a good article, thanks for the link!
I am paranoid about injuring myself because I figure I’ve got the odds (and the pounds) stacked against me by starting running when I’m overweight and middle-aged.
Of course, you can get injured if you’re young and fit too. My 17 year old niece was running in statewide competitions, doing great, then on a cross-country run she slipped going down a slight hill, and snapped her femur clean in half. (Even just typing that makes me shudder.)
And, also of course, as soon as the doctor clears her she’s going to go back to running again. It is impressive how much people love running. Scary, but impressive.

Hi Angelique and Merry,
In one way, it does seem obvious that first-timers for anything could be at higher risk for anything, but the reasons surprise me.
That’s one reason I love doing this blog; I really do learn a lot of interesting things.
