Some placebos better than others for pain?

by Marijke Durning, RN on March 5th, 2008

It hardly seems real - can one placebo (sugar pill) really be better than another? Can one be more effective than another?

Apparently, it is so. According to Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist at Duke University, who had a letter published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), patients in one study reported better pain relief with placebos that cost 2.50 per dose than did those patients who received placebos that only cost 0.10 per dose.

This finding brings to mind the effectiveness of packaging and marketing techniques - if someone thinks you have a better product, chances are it’s likely to work better.

Interesting.
