Do you suffer from pain caused by GERD?
People who have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) experience frequent heartburn and are at risk for other, more serious, health problems.
Up to now, the treatment is managing heartburn to minimize the damage the acid can do to the esophagus and reduce the discomfort. Treatment includes lifestyle modifications (diet, weight loss, etc), lifting the head of the bed, not lying down right after eating, and so on. Over-the-counter or prescription medications can help somewhat as well.
Now, there may be a surgery that can help some people with GERD. In the February edition of the American Journal of Gastroenterology, researchers described and anti-reflux surgery that had a 85% to 95% short-term success rate among 441 patients who had GERD. Long-term success is not yet known.
You can read more about this study in the Reuter’s article: Surgery may provide long-term acid reflux relief.
