Help My Hurt

Sore hands or wrists not necessarily from carpal tunnel

by Marijke Durning, RN on April 1st, 2008

I have a nice office in my house, a nice big desk, a beautiful bay window, and a very comfortable chair. However, over the past two weeks, I’ve been working out of the kitchen or dining room because I needed the extra space of the tables there. Not a good idea. My left wrist is killing me now and I know that it’s because the set up was not good enough to use the laptop safely and properly.

This article is timely: Sore Wrists And Hands Can Result From Our Work: But Is It Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

I know (or strongly feel) that my problem isn’t carpal tunnel, just overwork and misuse of the tendon in my left hand. But it is amazing at how many people in the Western world are afflicted with CTS. According to this article, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons estimate that 2 million people in the United States are affected by CTS. That’s a large number for what is more-or-less an avoidable disorder.

If you work a lot with computers, do you do anything to minimize your risk? If so, what? If not, why not?

1 opinion for Sore hands or wrists not necessarily from carpal tunnel

I work all day on my laptop. Whether I’m in the office or work from home, I have an external keyboard that I use as I find the laptop keyboard uncomfortable. I also use a USB mouse that I connect to my laptop, and have a gel wristrest. If it wasn’t for that wristwrest I know I’d run into problems. I haven’t gone ‘all out’ buying an ergonomic keyboard or anything, but what I have now works for me.
