New osteoporosis drug (Teriparatide) approved in Europe
Sometimes the treatment for certain illnesses or disorders can cause other problems. One such situation is glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. That is osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) that is brought on by treatment with medications like prednisone.
Right now, treatment for osteoporosis is limited but last week, the European Commission approved the medication teriparatide (brand name: Forsteo) for the treatment of this type of osteoporosis.
The medication has been available in Europe since 2003 for post-menopausal osteopororis and it was made available to men in 2007.
