Lacosamide promising treatment for painful diabetic neuropathy

by Marijke Durning, RN on April 17th, 2008

As people with diabetes live with regulating their blood glucose (sugar), their body can take a toll on the ups an downs of the glucose level. One problem that this can cause is diabetic neuropathy. The effects of neuropathy can be devastating and, currently, isn’t much relief for many who live with it.

Now, investigators are pinning their hopes on an anticonvulsant lacosamide, originally used for preventing or limiting seizures. It’s not unusual for medications that are meant for one illness to be used for another, so let’s hope that this one continues to be promising and becomes a good option for treating the painful disorder.

For more information on lacosamide and diabetic neuropathy, you can read the PRNews press release.
