What timing for ortho week: my son broke his finger

Well, it was bound to happen; we’ve been fracture-free in this house for a while now. I think we may have been having the longest fracture-free streak since the kids were born. Yesterday evening, that ended. My youngest - the 16-year-old - came home from school with a rather swollen middle finger. He told me he’d jammed it playing basketball. It looked broken to me but he was not too thrilled about going to the hospital.

Now, this son has broken two fingers before so we know the routine, but he really didn’t want to go to the hospital last night so I splinted the finger and told him we’d re-evaluate it today. When he got home from school today, I didn’t like how it looked, so off to the ER we went.

Now, he’s got a nicely splinted finger wrapped up hand and orders to return in three weeks and he’s not to play any of his sports. Yeah. Right. He has to go to the orthopedic clinic in three weeks to be sure all is ok.

You know what though? For all the complaints I hear about our medical system here in Canada, especially in Quebec, I cannot complain. Sure, we waited, but his problem wasn’t exactly life threatening. We left the house at a little after 6 PM and were home a little after 10 PM - the hospital is a half hour away. To say I’m a huge fan of the Montreal Children’s Hospital and its wonderful staff would be an understatement.
