More research: antidepressants could ease bowel disease

by Marijke Durning, RN on May 6th, 2008

For people living with chronic pain, to suggest that an antidepressant may help them relieve pain smacks of being told that it’s all in your head. But, a growing body of research is showing that antidepressants can - and do - help manage chronic pain in certain situations. For example, migraines have long been treated with antidepressants with some success for many people.

Now, I rarely report on research findings that aren’t yet in the human stages, but sometimes, research is interesting enough to bring hope. This is one such time.

While inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are not caused by psychological factors, they can be made worse by them, just as many illnesses can. In this research, the scientists were examining the relationship between the colon and the brain, and what they found was encouraging.
