Is kyphoplasty right for your back pain?

by Marijke Durning, RN on May 12th, 2008

The statistics are sobering: 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men are at risk for fractures in their spine from osteoporosis. These fractures cause chronic pain and - living with chronic pain often results in limited mobility, limited social activity and reduced ability to perform every day activities.

When the fractures occur, vertebrae (the spinal bones) end up one on top of the other.

While some people are able to manage their pain with medications and bracing, others are benefiting from a new procedure called kyphoplasty. In this procedure, doctors make two small incisions in the back and, using small telescopic instruments, they use a balloon to re-open the space between the vertebrae. Once the area is open again, the inject a special bone cement that supports the upper vertebra and keeps it from collapsing back down.
