Using a cane may delay knee osteoarthritis progression

by Marijke Durning, RN on May 12th, 2008

Although using a cane may seem like an admission to aging or not being able to manage on your own, it turns out that it may be that using a cane may delay the progression of osteoarthritis damage and pain to the knee.walking_with_Cane_NC

Living with chronic pain can make it hard to walk around and get the exercise you need, particularly if the pain is in the leg. Researchers in Australia studied 40 subjects with knee OA and how the arthritis progressed. The subjects were tested in bare feet, then with their comfortable walking shoes, and then 20 were also tested with the shoes and using a cane.

According to the researchers, “The use of a cane resulted in a striking 10 percent average decrease in the knee adduction moment. What’s more, a quarter of the participants demonstrated a reduction of more than 20 percent. While individuals tended to walk more slowly with the cane than unaided, they exhibited greater stride length and improved pelvis control, alleviating the destructive load on the affected knee.”
