Considering cortisone injections for arthritis pain?

by Marijke Durning, RN on May 16th, 2008

If you’ve been living with chronic pain from arthritis, you may have learned about cortisone injections that may provide relief. Cortisone is a steroid (natural) that doctors discovered can provide pain relief by reducing the inflammation of arthritis, thus reducing pain.

While the thought of getting such an injection may be off-putting because of the idea of how the needle may feel, it may be worth considering.

Personally, I did have a cortisone injection once and I wasn’t happy with either the injection or the results, but I have good reason to believe that it wasn’t administered properly. So, if I was faced with the need again, I probably would try it again - hesitantly - but I would.

Anyway, if you want to read more about what is involved in receiving a cortisone injection, from when its given, the benefits, and the procedure to any drawbacks, check out the information here at Cortisone injections and arthritis.

i had cortisone injections for a tendonitis - dequervain’s - but they only last for 4 months or so, and then the pain comes back i went back 2 more times. by the end of it, the doctor said he can’t inject anymore because the bones/tendons(?) disintegrate or something. so i ended up with surgery. anyway, i think cortisone decreased the swelling thus pain but did not solve the problem.

Hi Grace, in my case, as I said, I have reason to believe it wasn’t done correctly so I *think* I’d be willing to try it again if I needed it. It was also for tendonitis. Apparently, I’m very prone to it.

I had 2nd set of cortisone shots for shoulder pain(arthritis) 2 mo.after 1st shots. Blood pressure went up to 208/110 pulse 105. My usual numbers are 135/84-pulse 62 Blood sugar went up to 212. My usual blood sugar levels are low normal-87. Had a TIA later, same day. Dr.feels shots were not a contributing factor . I had a lot of confidence in my Dr. until she made that statement. I feel it’s pretty obvious that cortisone had a serious & dangerous effect on me. Incidently–shots did not relieve the pain at all. There must be a reason why Dr.s defend
medical treatment—-fear of liability ?? Ask questions before considering cortisone–even tho
you may not be told about possible negative consequences. My experience with Orthopedic
doctors has been disappointing. Cold, callous
attitudes & insensitive comments concerning the severity of my arthritic condition were made
making me lose any hope for relief from pain.
Any similar experiences out there ??
