Mucositis: a painful side effect from cancer treatment

by Marijke Durning, RN on May 19th, 2008

When I worked with people who had cancer, I saw several patients who had mucositis, a painful condition in the mouth. Sores form inside the mouth, which has become inflamed and very painful, making it very hard for patients to swallow their own saliva, let alone food and drink.

For many, mucositis is almost the last straw. They’re feeling lousy already, often they’re scared of what may happen, and now, their mouth hurts so much that they can’t even enjoy the little things in life, like a sip of their favorite drink.

Because good nutrition is vital, mucositis is a serious side effect of chemotherapy and doctors are trying hard to find ways to treat it. According to a presentation at the Annual Congress of the Oncology Nursing Society, Caphasol, an advanced electrolyte solution, a liquid solution that contains basic nutrients such as potassium or sodium, for example, “relieves painful oral mucositis (OM) and improves quality of life for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy.”

You can read more about this finding in the press release: CAPHOSOL relieves oral mucositis and improves quality-of-life in cancer patients.
