Help My Hurt

Poetry to ease the pain? (and a poetry book give-away)

by Marijke Durning, RN on June 11th, 2008

Chronic pain is not easy to live with - it can get into your very being. Sometimes, it helps to sit back and meditate or find some way to help your mind relax, allowing your brain to help ease the pain. Even if it only for a short while, the respite can do wonders to refresh your soul.

Along that vein, poet, Joshua A Kennedy, offered a signed book called Complicated, to give away to a Help My Hurt visitor.

He granted permission for me post one of his poems:

Fight The Fight:
I know you can’t see the sunset yet
You’re almost at the top of the mountain
The avalanche didn’t stop you
The coldest weather didn’t drop you
Your knees want to give out
You feel like you are carrying the heaviest burden
Many have climbed this exact same mountain
Some have fallen because it was meant for them to
I know you won’t fall
I believe in you
Accept my comfort to your spirit
Accept my encouragement to your soul
Let’s walk the path together on our own plateau
Hold on to this rope of strength I throw you
Don’t let go
I’m not saying the worst is over
But the best is definitely ahead
Don’t give up
Lean on my spiritual strength
We’re in this together
Fight the fight

~~~~~~
Although the poem was written about fighting cancer, it can also be taken for those who are fighting life with pain.
If you would like to win the copy of the book, please post a comment below about any post (other than this one) from this Help My Hurt blog. You can tell me if it was something you knew already, something you learned, something you thought was just flat out nonsense, or anything that makes up an appropriate comment. Anything you like, but you have to say something about the post.
If you would like to purchase the book, you can get it from Amazon.com: Complicated: Diamond Evolution
The give-away ends at 11:59 PM EST on June 19th, after which I will assign a number to each eligible post as they came in and then randomize them for the winner. Please be sure you leave a legitimate email in your information so I can get hold of you if you are the winner. No-one sees those email addresses except me.
~~~~~

The contest is now closed.

To choose the winner, I took all the qualifying comments and entered them into a randomizer program . The winner is… Jayne, who left a comment on June 19. Jayne, I will be sending you an email for your contact information.

Thank you all to left your thoughts and I hope you visit Help My Hurt again.

    :”My Little Angel Of Love”

    I gave life to a precious angel just a few short days ago
    I love her more than life itself but I loved her enough to let her go
    For two short days I held her close in a warm loving embrace
    Those beautiful moment in which we bonded my mind will never erase

    God gave me a Christian couple who can take care of her every need
    My eyes will always be streaked with tears; my heart will forever bleed
    If I could have just one wish, our paths will cross again
    But I’ll hold her close in my heart and love her in silence until then

    I know I did the right thing
    I’m at peace with the Lord above
    And I know he’ll always be watching over

    People who do not live with chronic pain of anykind, I’ve found, just can’t grasp the concept. I’m in pain every waking moment. I have fibromyalia and psoriatic arthritis (pretty much like rheumatoid arthrits).

    I felt sorry for myself for many years, but have realized just how strong a person I am to have survived for so long. I’ve also suffered from immense emotional pain, and sometimes I feel that this is worse than the physical.

    I’d love to receive this book of Poetry.

    Each word, phrase, or emotion that is expressed forms a bridge that links people and ideas together, and allows an escape route for the hurt. Through expression we grow stronger and bind the positive energies together.

    It’s good to hear that people’s wisdom teeth extractions go so smoothly. My daughter is having hers pulled a couple of days before Christmas this year. Fun.

    My grandmother introduced me to poetry when I was about 3 or 4. I love her for that.
