Legitimate patients with chronic pain vs drug seekers

by Marijke Durning, RN on June 18th, 2008

If you’ve been living with chronic pain and are one of the many people who have had to fight for adequate pain control, chances are you’ve felt like you may be seen as a drug seeker. It’s hard not to get that out of your head when you know that there are people who would do anything to get a drug fix; yet it so incredibly unfair when you know it’s because you absolutely need the medications.

Here is an article geared towards health professionals about the topic: Telltale Signs Of Severe Pain Separate Legitimate Patients From Drug Seekers.

It doesn’t solve the problem, but to me it’s saying that at least they’re thinking about it and trying to do something about it.

Have you ever run into issues about drug seeking behavior while trying to get treatment for your chronic pain?

Don’t forget the poetry book give-away: Poetry to ease the pain? (and a poetry book give-away).

It ends June 19th.

This has not happened to me as of yet. However, I have heard that this happens quite often. People that are in chronic pain will try any means to resolve these issues. I am a chronic pain suffer but due to my other medical issues am not able to take drugs for this pain.

It leaves me to try other measures such as accupuncture to cope with pain.

Hi Valerie, thanks for visiting Help My Hurt.
I’m lucky as it hasn’t happened to me either, but it is something I am aware of when I go to the dr.
