Chest pain 1 year after heart attack in nearly 1 out of 5

by Marijke Durning, RN on June 24th, 2008

georgeCarlin_nc With the news of George Carlin and Tim Russert, dying recently of heart problems - Carlin from heart failure and Russert from a heart attack, the issue is even now more in the news than ever before. This could be a good thing. After all, what better way to get people to take care of themselves than to let them know that people they admire can have the same problems. Sadly though, they had to die to get this message out.

timRUssert_nc For those people who are aware that they have heart issues and who have had a heart attack, this study finding, published in the latest issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine may be interesting for them: “of all patients [in the study], 389 (19.9%) reported angina [chest pain} one year after hospitalization for heart attack. Twenty-four patients (1.2%) reported having daily chest pain, 59 (3%) reported weekly chest pain and 306 (15.6%) reported having chest pain less than once a week.”

The researchers are looking into this more, but that is definitely interesting to know. And to watch out for.
