Gastric bypass/kidney stone connection?
Having and passing kidney stones is one of the most painful experiences that anyone can have - a kidney stone can knock down (literally) the strongest of men and women. The pain is very intense and seems to affect your whole body.
Now, researchers are noticing that not only do patients who had a gastric bypass surgery called a Roux-en-Y, the most common surgery done to treat morbid obesity, have a higher risk of developing kidney stones, they are developing them earlier than the doctors thought they would. According to a press release, Study links gastric bypass surgery to increased risk of kidney stones, “Although RYGB is a safe and effective treatment for morbid obesity, nephrolithiasis (the formation of kidney stones) has recently raised concerns among patients undergoing RYGB.” The release quotes the lead investigator, Manoj Monga, MD: “Although this study demonstrates that there is a higher risk for developing kidney stones, it is important to weigh the risk against the many benefits that RYGB has for the morbidly obese patient, including decreasing cardiac morbidity and improving diabetes.”

I have had gastric by pass and am having an extreme amount of problems with kidney stones. They are recurring, and even though I drink the recommended amount of water/fluids per day, they keep coming back. Anyone considering Roux-en-Y gastric bypass need to rethink this type of procedure. My doctor told me that my kidney stones are a direct result of the gastric bypass.

I had Gastric by pass surgery 7 weeks ago and 2 days ago I had to go and have a kidney stone removed. But this is not new to me it was my 7th stone. I had 6 before my surgery over a 5 year period. If I had to do over I would still have gastric by pass done. To help prevent them or catch them before they cause pain I will see my kidney doctor every 6 months. If they are caught early enough you can have litho done, they are busted by electronic waves, not a bad procedure at all.
