Combination Therapy for Migraine Shows Promise

by Marijke Durning, RN on June 29th, 2008

While still in the early stages (only at Phase II, one more phase is needed), a combination of rizatriptan (Maxalt), a migraine medication already in use, and acetaminophen, commonly sold as Tylenol.

The study’s results were published in the July issue of the journal Headache. There were four groups of patients: those who were randomized (assigned to) either receive the drug combination, acetaminophen plus placebo (sugar pill), rizatriptan plus placebo, or placebos only. The patients nor the doctors knew who was taking which. The results found that up to 90% of the patients who had an acute migraine found relief from the pain within two hours of taking the study drugs. Among the patients in the acetaminophen group, 70% got relief. In the rizatriptan group, 77% got relief, and only 46% did in the placebo group.

But, while the difference between the combination group and the rizatriptan group only group seems to be quite big, in analyzing it statistically, in study language - it’s not considered to be “statistically significant.”

So, more studies are being done. In the meantime, this could be hopeful for many who live with migraine pain.
