Botulinum toxin A injection may help some types of chronic headaches

by Marijke Durning, RN on July 10th, 2008

A study done in the Netherlands examining the use of botulinum toxin A for chronic headache found that this might be an effective treatment for patients with frontally localised chronic daily headache or chronic tension-type headache.

The researchers treated 10 patients who had headaches that got worse when pressure was applied in a specific point around the eyes. At first, the patients received a local anesthetic block with xylocaine (2%) at the point of pain. If the patients reported a decrease in pain, they were offered treatment with botulinum toxin.

After receiving the patients received the botulinum toxin, they all reported having less pain for the following two months. However, the pain did return.

More studies are to follow.
