ABCs of pain: M is for….

by Marijke Durning, RN on July 13th, 2008

M is for magnet…and how this blog keeps drawing you back! :-)

But seriously, M is for:

Migraine: Absolutely incredibly horrible head pain that can be accompanied by nausea, and inability to tolerate the light and many other sensations. Some good links for migraine information are:

Metastasis: People who have cancer may hear this word but have no clue what it means. If someone’s cancer has metastisized, the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This type of test gained popularity because it is an imaging test that does not use x-rays, but instead uses magnetic and radiofrequency waves. It can take still or moving pictures of organs and soft tissue.

Myofascial pain syndromes: According to the MayoClinic.com, “Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic form of muscle pain. The pain of myofascial pain syndrome centers around sensitive points in your muscles called trigger points. The trigger points in your muscles can be painful when touched. And the pain can spread throughout the affected muscle. What that means is that the pain can radiate beyond where the actual trigger point is.

Not to be nit-picky, but migraine is a lot more than just head pain. Migraine is a genetic neurological disease characterized by migraine attacks, of which headache is only one phase. Migraines can also be “silent” and have no pain associated with them.

I know you probably know this, but I want to make sure your readers are informed as well!

Another great resource for accurate migraine (and headache) information is http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine

I’m enjoying your ABC’s of pain series, Marijke! I’m learning a lot I didn’t know - I’m looking forward to the rest of it!

    Be well,
    MJ

Hi MJ, you’re not being nitpicky at all and thank you for reminding me of this. I guess you can say I’m lucky in one way that my migraines are usually only pain (stabbing pain behind my left eye).

I’m glad you’re enjoying the series. I hope that it’s useful to others as well. Thanks!
