Breakthrough in understanding CRPS in children

by Marijke Durning, RN on August 14th, 2008

Complex regional pain syndrome, what used to be called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), is continuing to puzzle researchers, but they may have come to a better understanding of what causes it.

Researchers studied the brains of children with CRPS and they found evidence of changes in brain circuitry in both those children who still had CRPS and those who had recovered from it.

It’s hoped that this understanding will bring forth further studies so that researchers can eventually pinpoint ways to use this knowledge to develop pain management techniques, if not a treatment and cure.
