Help My Hurt

What helps you relax? How about 50.00 from Amazon.com?

by Marijke Durning, RN on August 15th, 2008

What helps relax you when you have pain? Do you like to read a book that takes you away from it all? Do you like to read about ways to manage your pain or about people who have overcome diversity? Or do you prefer to listen to audio books, or good music? Some people like to watch movies or comedy routines on DVD.

Whatever your mode of relaxation is - I’ve got something for you. How about a 50.00 gift certificate for Amazon.com? Then you could get whatever you want to help you ease or manage your pain.

So, here’s the deal. Since it’s a nice prize,  you need to work a little bit for it. There are three ways you can enter:

One: tell me in the comment section about the last book you read and what you liked or didn’t like about it.

Two: Tell me in the comment section about another post on this site and what you got out of it.

Three: Visit my other blog Womb Within (about pregnancy) and tell me in the comment section here which post or posts you read and what you got out of it (them). The good thing about this approach, is it gives you *2* entries. :-)

Ok, now the rules:

  1. To be eligible to win, you must follow one of those three conditions. Leaving a message like ‘give me the prize’ or ‘awesome’ contest doesn’t cut it. This prize will run from today, August 15th, 2008 until 11:59 PM on August 30th (EST).
  2. You must put a valid email address in the text box (under your name) to be contacted for the prize if you are the winner. No-one else sees the email address so you won’t get spammed. You must live in North America because the certificate is for Amazon.com (sorry, rest of the world. I usually include everyone).
  3. You must make sure that my email address (marijke (dot) durning (at) b5media (dot) com) is not dumping directly into your junk folder. I have several prizes from here and Womb Within that are unclaimed because I am not getting responses from my emails and people are not coming back to check if they won.

That’s it. Good luck!

    “Awesome contest,” Marijke! LOL!

Reading is always a great way to relax for me. Normally I choose to read the Harry Potter books to relax, but I’m currently swamped with books to review, so, the last book I read was Puppy Chow Is Better Than Prozac (I’m actually hoping to post a review of it over at Mental Health Notes in the next day or two). I loved it because it showed two things: There is hope for people with mental illnesses, and sometimes that hope can come from sources other than medication.

The last book I read was “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” by Ina May Gaskin. I wish every pregnant woman would read that book! It’s so valuable to help women understand birth as a natural process, not one that generally requires medical intervention. It affirmed my decision to choose a midwife and have a home birth.

I like to read all kinds of books, last book LIVE FROM NEW YORK…an interesting behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live from the good years.
I tend to relax by doing something with the kids- games, etc, they take my mind off of things and if its the kids I pop in a comedy and get my mind destressed that way. I bake when its cold to destress and then donate the cakes and bring them around to neighbors so I have many destress and relax techniques

I’m currently reading The Sweet Far Thing, third in a series by Libba Bray. It’s a historical fantasy, with strong female characters in a time when women didn’t have much control over their own lives.

    Hi Marijke,

I read the article on the the closing of the MDC midwifery program at the wombwithin website . I heard that it was being threatened (again) with shutting down but just found out through the article there it had been determined on the 8th. I am a student midwife in Florida and it is a constant struggle to find a program that works for my family. The plan I have at this time is to get my CPM through an distance/online program and leave the state to practice.

what makes me relax is to lay down in my bed and have all windows closed so that it’s dark in the room and listen to the show HOW IT’S MADE because there music in the background is so calming.

Right now we are reading the book, Atherton. When I say we, I mean my two sons and I. We each take turns at reading a few pages each night and are almost done with the book and are looking forward to getting the next one in this series. We started reading to help encourage my younger son to read better because he struggles with reading. I thought that this would be great experience for him, especially during the summer. Now, even when we’re so tired, the boys still want to read. This is a really great book. Especially for boys 8 & up, who love adventure. I have to say, I also have enjoyed this book and it really does keep your interested in what’s going to happen next.
    Thanks.

I read to deal with pain and to escape from it for a while. And not just physical but also emotional. The last book I read was really 2 books Books 1 & 2 of the Resonance Mates by Bianca D’Arc Hara’s Legacy was 1 and Davin’s Quest was 2. I loved them and can’t wait to have the money to buy book 3 Jaci’s Experiment.
I know they’re not to everyones taste but I love Futuristic Romance and this series has a nice spin to it and its not mainstream.
Now days I mostly read on my eBookwise and I love it. And no one can see the racy covers. Plus I have an extra chip so it stores around 100 books on it at once.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the contest!

I love to read real books when I can, but sometimes I find that I need to be in a hot bath or have my eyes closed when I’m in a lot of pain. Either that or my hands won’t hold a book because my arms don’t work that day! After my last surgery, I fell in love with the short sci-fi stories available at EscapePod.com. They’re free to subscribe and put out a short story each week. This means that if I absolutely can’t read a book or even keep my eyes open to watch a movie, I can still enjoy “reading” at least once a week.

For real books, I recently read the fantasy novel “Mind The Gap” and enjoyed the quick pace and the complete escape from reality that it offered.

Thank you for the chance to win the contest.

The last book I read was Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. I enjoyed the book because it involved a soldier & the girl he really likes, which I can relate to because my hubby is in Iraq, anyways, they meet one another & he is deployed, so they write letters to one another. The characters annoyed me a bit, the girl was too “holier-than-thou” & the guy acted like a jerk at times. But overall, I did really like the book.

    “July 24th, 2008
Some people need to take baby naming a bit more seriously

Many of us have had a chuckle or two at some of the names celebrities give their children ”

So much truth is here. When a name is so unique that it becomes a spelling challange or a “how do you pronounce this?” or a “What kind of name is that?” Than all the parent has done is “name a boy Sue “, the child’s life will be harder.

I just finished “Fearless Fourteen” by Janet Evanovich. It’s very light and easy to read and so very funny–very different from my usual reads, I lke thrillers and soon to be classics like Cormac McCarthy novels. Anyway, this really took me away from my pain (chronic) and I constantly laughed out loud. The only problem was that I read it so fast it was over before I knew it! Very enjoyable light read.

When I have pain I mix the cures.
    1. Ice helps with the trobs.
    2. Movies keep my mind off it.
    3. sleep, if I can, takes me out of the I am aware of the pain.
    4. last is a big powerful drug that makes me …forget or not care.

(ginger helps with the nausea that my pain starts to bring)

A soak in a warm tub, placing just the right amount of lavendar oil in the water followed by Lavendar body products when I’m done and a lavendar spray for bedding puts me in a state of ease, tranquility and calm. For quick help, take a deep breathe in and say calm, hold that breathe, while you exhale say I release stress.

The last book that I read was Mister B. Gone by Clive Barker. It was a good story but it does not compare to some of the other books by Clive Barker. I like a book with lots of pages. Bring me into the story and don’t let me go until the story is over. With Mister B. Gone, I could take it or leave it. Not his best work but still not too bad a story.

I read the post on Womb Within about Keeping clean and green during pregnancy. I am really trying to become more green and love reading ideas that others have on the subject. I have heard alot about Seventh Generation products. I thought they only had general cleaning supplies but they have baby wipes and more. I like that your review showed they didn’t leave streaks which is a problem I have with my current glass cleaner. The starter kit may be a good way to try their products.

To relax, reading, watching TV (either comedy or history channel usually). I must admit my need for relaxation has decreased markedly since I retired!
So far as the last book I read, I usually have 2-3 going at the same time. I think the last one I finished was Antiques to Die For by Jane Cleland–didn’t get anything in particular from it, it was just a pleasant not-very-suspenseful mystery novel. Am currently in the middle of both Conquerors Pride by Timothy Zahn and Sweet Deceit by Elizabeth Lowell. Although I do read more substantive books, I go through the lighter fiction quite rapidly!

Looked at the Doctor’s Rules for Patients on Womb Within, and agree (as a fellow nurse) that they pretty well hit the mark. I really remember one MD who walked in as I was working with a VERY abusive labor patient (and you know they are cut a lot of slack because of the fact that many of them don’t handle labor well) and was pleasantly surprised when he raked her over the coals. I truly wasn’t that upset by her (verbal abuse is better than being bitten or slapped, which also happened with some other patients!) but it was still nice to hear. With classes, education and, yes, medication, more women do well with the process of labor, but there are always the exceptions!

I just read a book called “Lords of Discipline” by Pat Conroy which was amazing. It’s an emotional and gutwrenching read which is well worth it. Fabulous!

The post about Teri Garr and her MS was meaningful to me because she was one of the first actresses I remember seeing and loving as I entered adulthood. It breaks my heart to see her struggling with MS but it does my heart good to see how she’s using her situation to raise awareness, etc. I admire her tenacity of spirit.

At Womb Within I liked the post “Don’t Bother with the Cocoa Butter”. It confirmed what I’ve always suspected…that there’s really nothing you can do. I personally feel it’s more a genetic predisposition than anything. I also like the posts that clue us in to celebrities that are expecting. That’s fun!

    Cool contest!

The last book I read was “I Am the Central Park Jogger” by Trisha Meili (sp?). It tells her story and how she healed from the incredible trauma. It’s inspiring for someone with chronic pain because it shows how she uses mindfulness, intention, touch and prayer and how that helped her heal. I’ve found a lot of ideas on how to incorporate potentially healing things into my day and there are still some things she did that I want to try. It’s also great for the inspiration and hope it provides, it is uplifting without being syruppy sweet or denying the hard parts of life.

the last book i finished was ‘blink’ and yes, it took my mind off my chronic pain. this kind of nonfiction is not for everyone, though–including friends who also have chronic pain. bottom line: it helped me because it was engaged and all consuming, and books like that take your mind off the pain. i guess my best advice is to figure out what kind of books and/or music take YOUR mind off - fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, doom…who cares? read or listen to whatever does the trick! :-) good luck all.

Robert Fulghum’s book “From Beginning to End”, The Rituals of Our Lives.

This book is like comfort food for my soul. This is not the first time I have read it and certainly won’t be the last.

My father died this past June, eight days after my birthday. While he was in the hospital I told two of his nurses about this book. They were best friends, both in their 20’s and both about to be married. I also told them about Fulghum’s book “True Love”. One of them was still on her honeymoon when my dad died. Weddings and funerals have marked this year for me and both bring this book to mind. Reading it is at the same time comforting and reflective.
Although I would really like to win because I always buy books at Amazon, even if I don’t I hope someone that reads this takes the opportunity to read the back cover of the book at Amazon.com.

I last read “Intimacy After Infidelity,” by Steve Solomon, who is a friend of mine. In a way, the title is unfortunate because it probably will limit its readers to those who have cheated/been cheated on. The book was full of great information on communication between partners, and IMHO, it would be helpful for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship. I know I got a lot out of it.

The last book I read was As a Man Thinketh by James Allen. I’ve read it several times. It’s a short book, but I absolutely love it. It is philosophical and open-ended, and every time I read it, I get something new out of it.

The last book I read was “My Sister’s Keeper.” Sadly, that was about a year ago. My son is two and keeps me running. I LOVED that book and I’m now a huge Jodi Picoult fan. I make my husband buy me all her books but I haven’t had time to read any of them. The book was sad but was so great I couldn’t put it down, the ending was amazing (and of course sad).

Reading is almost TOO relaxing for me — I’ve loved to do it since I was a little kid, but if I’m in a really comfortable position, it puts me right to sleep.
The last book I read was a great one — “Into the Heart” is the true story of (and written by) an anthropological research scientist who lives with the Yanomama, a group of indigenous people divided into various tribes, who live deep in the Amazon rainforest and had only recently made contact with “civilized” people.
After spending several years with them, he marries and falls in love with (in that order) one of the girls, which sparks much conflict and controversy within the tribe, with the Venezuelan government, and among his scientific/academic peers.
Both an in-depth study of a primitive people untainted by modern civilization, and a love story, I’d highly recommend it.

Imitation in Death by JD Robb was the last book I read. I liked it because it is a series that I have been reading, I really like the characters in the story. The only thing I don’t really care for is you can tell a romance writer writes them, and I’m not a big romance fan. If it weren’t for that I’d give the series 5 stars :)

The last book I read was Portrait In Death by JD Robb. It’s part of her “In Death” series of books, a sort of crime thriller/romance series set in the future. (Sounds weird, I know.) I’ve been reading this series for a while, and I like that they’re easy reads and occupy enough of brain that I’m thinking about something other than not feeling well! But they don’t take up so much brainpower I have to pay close attention.

I’m currently reading Life Disrupted by Laurie Edwards, an excellent book about living with chronic illness as a young person.

Thanks for offering the gift card, Marijke!

    Be well,

After a long or very stressful day the best thing to help get me relaxed is to either take a long hot shower or just soak in a bubble bath. Just some personal “Me” time. Reading does help sometimes, but for me a lot of times if I’m really into a book I tend to stay up later than I should trying to find out what else is going to happen.

    Is your hospital bag ready?

This post caught my eye. I was 36 when I had my last child. The year was 1964. Needless to say we were especially cautious during this time, women didn’t have babies in their mid 30’s in the mid 60’s everyday as they do now. My husband always kept one car full of gas and my bag packed already in it. However when the big time came we took the wrong car, arriving at the hospital almost on empty and with no bag. Back then I could not have imagined the internet and blogs and such, but I am glad there are so many readily available resources and information out there for women today.

Reading is what I get lost in. I have just read “A Day to Pick Your Cotton” by Michael Phillips. I just found out that this is a 3 book series and this is the second one. I have to read the other, I couldn’t put this one down. The setting is at the end of the the war between the states. on a southern plantation. All the slaves were killed but a fourteen year old girl and she ran away and found Rosewood where the parents of the fifteen year old girl and another slave who ran away and had her baby were living. She joined with them to keep anyone from knowing that they were the only ones living there so no one would take the plantation away from them and send them away/ Later a 6 year old girl can when her mother died. the four girls 2 black and 2 white learned to work to stay alive and picked cotton to sell for taxes. The white girl told the others about God and they learned to trust Him to help them. Lots of excitement- the black girl was almost hanged by the Klu Klux Klan and they saved her.

I just finished Jasper Fforde’s The Fourth Bear. I have now reread all of his books to get over the sad fact that he is not putting one out this year because he’s a new dad. I respect that but these books are so funny, they really engross you and make you forget whatever else is going on. I love the literary references and realistic qualities he gives his characters (who are either fiction jumpers, historical figures, literary greats, nursery rhyme characters or animals). The one thing that I dislike about them is that I have to wait until 2009 for the next one!!!

Growing up in an abusive home, I really couldn’t deal with the pain and hurt I was going through and reading was always a way out. I could become a totally different person at that time and live in a different place as the person in the story.
The last book I have read is Twilight, and I love the intense passion and the connection that Edward and Bella have between them.

I read “When your child has a migraine”. My oldest son (14) frequently gets headaches, and I couldn’t imagine telling him that they aren’t as bad as he says they are. I know how bad my headaches are, so of course I am going to help him find ways to feel better, wether it be by medince, or lying down.

when I’m hurting and want to relax it away, I start a nice warm bath, turn off the lights and have scented candles going and just soak for a while.
I also Love to read the Harry Potter Books, they always take you away from reality, so you have nothing to bother you.
Thanks for the chance to win, I love Amazon

As a full time & primary caregiver to our 82 year mom, it would be a nice to purchase I love Lucy DVDs to replace the ones that have been overly used. Mom loves Lucy!!!

Reading is a great escape when you need to get away from it all.

I love to read and check out several books a week.

The last book I read was “Lost Boys”. It made me realize that even though I feel stressed, there are others in the world who have it a lot worse off than I do. The things I stress about are nothing compared to losing family members in a war or being refugees.

I have chronic pain and one of my favorite things to do to ease my pain is getting on the computer and surfing the web to get my mind off of it
