Help My Hurt

Totally unrelated to pain - need advice re….

by Marijke Durning, RN on August 19th, 2008

a piano!

My parents gave me their piano, which has been in their house for about 40 years. I like the piano and want it, but now that it’s in the house, all I can smell is pipe and cigar smoke. Either it’s really strong or I’m really sensitive - but either way, I have to find a way to neutralize the odor somewhat.

Any suggestions? It’s solid wood, a light brown that’s darkened to a dark honey. I have no clue what type of wood it is though.

I’ve heard that if you keep something like that somewhat enclosed with an open can (perhaps two) of coffee grounds, they absorb the “bad” odors and help rid the air of them.

You might also be able to use a citrus-based furniture polish on the piece; perhaps that would help?

there are some odor-killing sprays but they are pretty toxic. try wiping it off on inside and outside and then put inside several of those backing soda smell catchers they use for fridges.
