Book review and give-away - Chronic Pain Care Workbook

by Marijke Durning, RN on September 24th, 2008

I enjoy reviewing books and I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again - if I don’t like a product or book that I’m sent, I will tell you. Luckily, I haven’t come across many of those so far.

Today, I have a workbook that was sent to me by a publishing company, New Harbinger Publications, Inc. The book, called The Chronic Pain Care Workbook, by Michael J. Lewandowski, PhD, wasn’t what I expected. To tell you the truth though, I wasn’t sure what I expected.

If you would like to know what I though, please watch this video where I explain what I found in the book.

I have a copy to give away to one of my readers, but if you would like to buy a copy, you can follow this Amazon Associates link where you can order it:

Now, to win a copy - from today until Friday, October 3, you can leave a comment in the comment section telling me why you would like this book. I automatically weed out any comments that don’t follow the rules, like "great contest" or "give me the book." I just want to know why you would like it, either for you or for someone else.

The contest will end on Friday, Oct. 3, at 11:59 PM, EST, after which I will use the randomizer available at randomizer.org to choose the winner.

Good luck!

    Hi Marijke,

Fighting the good fight is what they call it.

When a chronic pain sufferer must stand by and watch someone they love dealing with the pain of terminal cancer, there is an element of truth they can feel, that is missed by others. I know the agony of bone pain so severe that no drugs can take it away, and the lightning strikes of neuralgia. I have two of the so-called ’suicide disorders’, trigeminal neuralgia and chronic cluster headaches. The pain from lupus is excruciating and disabling, and adding Migraine to the top is enough for anyone to handle. When I see my FIL beginning his journey of pain so similar to what I’ve felt myself, I share an empathy for him that crosses the boundaries of “in-law” status. No one can take away his pain, but if I could pass along the gift of this workbook, maybe it would help to make his experience of it easier.

Thanks for bringing this workbook up Marijke! Someone out there is going to see your review and it’ll make a difference in their life!

for 15 yrs i have suffered from a thigh pain (like a tightening of muscle) & neurologists have ordered MRIs and muscle relaxers, but NOTHING relieves. biggest problem? it inhibits my walking. the pain is only when i am standing; when walking i often have to pause & sit for a moment. this is not debilitating but it sure is a pain in the neck (thigh!). perhaps you’ll have something akin to this problem of mine. thanks.

I have been in pain for over 12 years now. I can’t get the Doctor’s to test me for hemochromatosis, or hematochromatosis which I believe, and I also want to be tested for Stojgren’s syndrome, but they won’t test me for it either. I try to avoid high iron foods because I know that they make me feel super bad for many days after I eat them. I use eye drops for my very dry eyes, drink lots of water for my very dry mouth. Yet, what can you do for the bone and joint cracking and relentless pain, if they won’t test you for things you believe you have, even though you’ve done your own medical research for years on end. I realize there are no cures for either of these conditions if I indeed have them, but maybe I could try some more appropriate meds then they have me on. Doctor’s just like to shove pills at the symptoms, and not really find out the true cause of the pain, that keeps you from ever getting any decent rest or relief. I would not wish pain on anyone, nor have I ever thought or said that someone was not in pain if they told me they were. Yet, I have known people, many of them in fact, that have said that- so and so really can’t be in pain like they say they are, because look at them they can do so much. Just because a person forces themselves to continue doing the daily things of life that must be done, does not mean they are not physically hurting. Of course, there are those who thing you are just a mental case or hypochrondriac, but they are not living your life in your body. We are not mental cases, we are those living with pain others do not feel.
Good luck to all and continue to believe in your ability to get through each new day.

I have two busted discs, with scarring, which doctors will not touch. The shots do nothing for me. I’m in pain all the time, just different levels. This has gone on over twenty years, yet I must function as best I can–I refuse to spend my days drugged out. Any suggestions would receive serious attention!

I used MSM, a natural sulfur compound found at natural food stores. It helped me greatly. It actually repairs nerves and muscle. It turned my blue feet pink and I was no longer bed-ridden after just one month of use. Do your own research on it and try it for yourself. I was skeptical before I used it but it was amazing!

I have fibromyalgia and find it difficult and exasperating to wait on doctors to determine a course of treatment. I want to have good days again! Where I can get out of bed and stretch and yawn instead of hobble up and try not to cry because everything hurts :(. I need a plan, I’ve tried many of my own regimens but it’s all guesswork. I need something I can use by myself, for myself, that is organized and laid out for me!

    Sep 30, 2008 at 11:59 am

I have been researching my Fibromyalgia since being diagnosed in December of 2007. I have lost my job and such a big part of my life due to chronic pain. I was once considered overly energetic and always busy and on the go. Now my life seems to consist of minimal everything. I feel accomplished when I have done my stretches for the day.
I am having financial problems as so many others are when they are hit with something not expected in life. I get all my information from online resources like livelywomen and chronicbabe, as well as WebMD support group. I cannot afford the things in life that I could when I was working. Now reading materials and anything that can help me make my life better are a valuable part of my existence. I have worked my entire life until the pain just finally shut me down and forever changed my life. I simply want a copy of the workbook in hopes that it will provide me with some ways of dealing with my illness and making some positive changes to help me feel better and hopefully make my way back into the working world or at least the land of the living again.

Please help me by sending me a copy of the workbook, I need it and would feel so blessed! It would certainly be put to good use and I would gladley recommend it to all my fellow Fibro Friends.

    Thank you,

    Jo Hake Abilene, Texas

I have fibromyalgia and I have found that some of the best care has been self care and lifestyle changes. (Although Lyrica is wonderful, too. :) ) I’m always looking for “workbooks” for the various conditions and pain and fatigue I have…and haven’t found one yet that I REALLY like. The Arthritis Self-Help book is OK, but it doesn’t have enough “worksheet” and “action item” type things for my taste. :)

    Hi Marijke,

This book sounds interesting. I was put on disability at age 26 due to daily migraines, endometriosis/intense menstrual pain and chronic back pain. A year later I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. These are my main health issues that I feel cause my pain. I know people say they have flares, but my pain is pretty constant.. I never have a “0″ pain day. On a scale of 0-5 my daily pain hovers around a 3. My “flares” put me into the 4+ range. I have tried numerous methods to get my pain under control but I have yet been able to do so. Anything to try and aid my health and understanding of my ailments would be beneficial. I would love to try this book. Thank you.

I work with a number of clients who suffer from chronic pain. In my work, I have found that there is no magic solution to relieve pain - every body is different and we often need to explore until we find the appropriate tool or technique to help relieve pain. As a result, I am always looking, learning and searching for better tools to help my clients, and I would love to learn more from Dr. Lewandowski in this book so I can help more clients find relief.
