Help My Hurt

If you have lupus or other diseases, do you know about the Spoon Theory?

by Marijke Durning, RN on November 17th, 2008

I just read about the Spoon Theory, written by Christine Miserandino, who writes the blog, But You Don’t Look Sick.

One day, when Christine was out with a friend, she was trying to describe what it was like to be living with lupus. To demonstrate her point, she used a handful of spoons. Those spoons represented what she could do - no spoons mean no more could be done. It’s a wonderful way of explaining what it’s like to have a chronic illness like lupus, but also others, like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, even for those who are receiving treatment for cancer and other diseases.

To read Christine’s Spoon Theory, please visit her site: The Spoon Theory.

Sometimes, a simple thing like this is all it takes to help someone understand what it’s like to live with a chronic illness or chronic pain.
