European agency recommends annual Aclasta for male osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is often thought of as a women’s disease, but many men do develop the brittle bone disease as well. According to this article, Once Yearly Aclasta® Recommended In EU To Treat Male Osteoporosis And Reduce Risk Of New Fractures In Patients After Hip Fracture, an estimated one out of five men over 50 years old, experience an osteoporotic fracture.
Aclasta (zoledronic acid), is a once per year medication that is given by intravenous (IV) to help treat osteoporosis. It is approved in many countries around the world, including the United Sates. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), the body that makes recommendations regarding medications and approvals for the European Union, has recommended that Aclasta’s label be changed to indicate that Aclasta has been found to reduce the risk of fractures in men by 35% and in women after menopause who have had a recent low-trauma fracture.
