Study subjects needed for tennis elbow at University of Pittsburgh

If you live near the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and have tennis elbow, you may be interested in this appeal for participants. The researchers are looking for people for a study to evaluate the benefits of prolotherapy for tennis elbow.
Tennis elbow is not an injury reserved for athletes, despite what the name implies. Anyone can develop tennis elbow because it is a repetitive stress injury. The pain usually is felt where the tendons of the forearm muscles attach to the outside of the elbow, but it often radiates down into the forearm and wrist.
While many people do well by resting their elbow and taking over-the-counter pain killers, some cases of tennis elbow need further treatment.
I wrote about prolotherapy in January (Prolotherapy – effective treatment for lower back pain?) but it was for use in helping relieve lower back pain. The treatment aims to repair the damaged ligaments and tendons, strong tissues that hold muscle to bone and bind joints together.
According to the article, More Participants Sought For Study Of Prolotherapy For Tennis Elbow At UPMC, prolotherapy “uses an irritant such as a sugar-based solution that is injected into the deep tissue structures. This causes a localized inflammation, which then causes the tendons and ligaments to repair and strengthen themselves. As the tissues repair they get stronger, which can lead to a reduction in pain.”
